KICK-OFF MEETING OF THE ERASMUS+ PROJECT “DISTANCE EDUCATION OF THE FUTURE: EU BEST PRACTICES IN RESPONSE TO THE NEEDS OF MODERN HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS AND THE LABOR MARKET” (DEFEP)

The official opening of the Erasmus+ project in the field of Higher Education Capacity Development “Distance Education of the Future: EU Best Practices in Response to the Demands of Modern Higher Education Students and the Labor Market” (DEFEP) took place on April 3-6, 2023 in a hybrid format.

The presentation of the project and participants took place on April 3, 2023. On this day, welcoming speeches from the EACEA Project Officer Rosalba Nardelli and the Heads of the National Erasmus+ Office in Ukraine and Moldova Svitlana Shytikova and Claudia Melinte were delivered at the Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University.

On April 05-06, the Uman National University of Horticulture hosted a kick-off meeting of the coordinator and participants of the project, which brought together a cohort of universities from Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, and Italy, in a mixed format.

The team of the Erasmus+ KA2 DEFEP project “Distance Education of the Future: EU Best Practices in Response to the Demands of Modern Higher Education Students and the Labor Market” invites you to join the International Forum of Educators and Employers “Distance Education of the Future: Challenges and Prospects”.

The forum aims to promote the development of distance education by integrating the best practices of higher education institutions, the state, business, and civil society in Ukraine, Moldova, and the EU.

Thematic areas of the forum:

Trends in the development of distance education in higher education institutions: challenges and solutions in the institutional, organizational and regulatory spheres

Erasmus+ Ka2 DEFEP project: successful implementation continues

The Uman National University of Horticulture continues to implement the international Erasmus+ Ka2 DEFEP project (Distance Education for Future: best EU practices in response to the requests of modern higher education seekers and labor market).

The project “Distance Education for Future: best EU practices in response to the requests of modern higher education seekers and labor market” (DEFEP) is supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Ka2 Program and implemented by 11 partner universities from Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, Spain, and Italy. The project is coordinated by the Petro Mohyla National University. The project implementation period is 2023 -2027.

In accordance with the pre-agreed project implementation program, the inaugural meetings of the DEFEP project committees and working groups were held on May 15-19, 2023, with representatives of the consortium universities participating.

During the meetings, the chairmen, deputy chairmen, and secretaries of the committees and working groups were elected. At the same time, the powers were defined, responsibilities were distributed, tasks were defined, and work plans for committees and working groups were developed in accordance with the project management plan.

During the meetings, lively discussions took place that allowed the experts to exchange views and discuss ways of communication and the sequence of actions for further coordinated work for the successful implementation of the project.

Results of a sociological study within the framework of the international ERASMUS KA2 project – DEFEP

The team of the Erasmus+ KA2 DEFEP project “Distance Education of the Future: EU best practices in response to the needs of modern higher education students and the labor market” conducted a sociological study to describe the priorities, needs and demands of stakeholders in distance education as a potentially separate form of education. The survey was conducted by a formalized online questionnaire from May 1 to May 10, 2023.

The general population of the study included students, research and teaching staff, managers and affiliated employers of higher education institutions:

Uman National University of Horticulture;
Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University;
Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman;
Lviv National University of Environmental Management;
National University “Chernihiv Polytechnic”;
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

The study found that stakeholders are generally ready to implement distance education as a separate form, but their readiness is not uniform. Thus, students are quite optimistic about distance education, focusing on its practicality and comfort, but realizing its lower quality; managers and academic staff also see the problem of lower quality of knowledge and skills acquired in the distance format, and emphasize a number of problems characteristic of it (organizational, technical, psychological, etc.), although they understand the feasibility and rationality of this format, and therefore are ready to implement it; employers at the personal level prefer the traditional format, but at the institutional level are ready for the massification of distance education and are interested in participating in its improvement.

Although there is a strong differentiation in attitudes toward the distance format among representatives of different fields of education, different HEIs, etc., for the bulk of stakeholders, distance education has already become a habit that they are ready to formalize.
